4 days down!
It’s kind of unbelievable that it’s only been 4 days since we left Sydney because it already feels like a whole world away.
Let me tell you, packing up a whole house and trying to get rid of all of our possessions acquired over 6 years was no easy feat! The car is absolutely packed to the brim (don’t ask me where anything is!), but we are well and truly on our way.
We spent our first day driving to Lake Hume in Albany, leaving behind a very stormy Sydney, and worrying that we might be camping in a mud bath. Well, we had nothing to worry about on the rain front, but instead were dripping with sweat! Thank goodness the tent is quite airy, because we survived our first night under the stars.
Our second day took us over the border into Victoria, camping at Anglesea after a quick stop in St Kilda. Again we were fearful of rain, but again we had nothing to worry about other than it being 10 degrees cooler than the night before! After rifling through (basically the whole car) to find our jumpers, we ate dinner seaside before another night snuggled up in our 2 person tent.
Day 3 and we’re on the Great Ocean Road. What an incredible day! We absolutely loved driving along the coast, particularly from Anglesea to Apollo Bay. The scenery was breathtaking, we made very slow progress with all the photo stops! Unfortunately, there are no dogs allowed in the Port Campbell National Park, so Michael and I had to take turns getting out at each stop along the Twelve Apostles trail, while the other waited in the car with Beefie. Absolutely worth it though, they are simply amazing, and we had a perfect day for it (read: no filters required!). The highlight of the trip so far for sure.
We ended our third day cooking up “camp nachos” in Port Fairy, a very cute historic town near the end of the Great Ocean Road.
Today, our fourth day, we slept in a little and got started a bit slower, knowing we only had a 2 hour drive today. We enjoyed a leisurely coffee in Port Fairy before setting off for Mount Gambier. After a quick “scenic route”, that compared to yesterday wasn’t very, we arrived at Blue Lake, which absolutely lives up to its name! We did a short hike called Mutton Leg Lake (actually not a lake), carrying Beefie most of the way (it’s a hard life she has!). Now we’re chilling in the tent, with full bellies (bbq grill fajitas = yum!), as it rains around us. Perfect snuggling weather. Good night xoxo
